all this month, we've been doling out a daily post featuring tiles from ruan hoffmann's newest collection - postcard's from myself. sharing each of ruan's exuberant cement tile designs and their inspirations has given tile envy much cement tile cha-cha!
but waaaaay over in morocco -essaouira to be exact- is the heartland of cement tiles (and zelliges), where tiles adorn surfaces unlike any other in the world. "exotic beauty" barely describes this city tucked away behind an ancient fortress.
recently, i've been corresponding with a talented designer in london - lisa burke - and discovered that she is the owner of a 200-year old riad deep in the medina of essaouira called:
lisa has stunningly restored her home away from home with a mingling of the historic & modern.
when not there, lisa opens her home to fortunate travelers who stay in her architectural gem and enjoy lisa's personal guidance when planning their travel. this is my next dream vacation!
history, beauty, views- oh yes, and surfing!
i can already hear the sea, taste the foods, and imagine all the tiles...
