A grand tile tour -

10 March 2010

As mentioned earlier, I'm off to Hearst Castle this month -this coming weekend to be exact. Me, Martin, and Tilevera's first Hearst Castle Collection dealers- on a private tour extravaganza directed by the magnificent museum curator, Hoyt Fields.

I wasn't going to share the details with all of you, because I didn't want to be all bragadocious about it. But then our friend Larissa said I should because it is such a unique event and all. So OK- there you have it. Me and some of the most amazing, artistic tile purveyors from around the US off on a private tour of Hearst Castle with a focus on the castle's tiles and stones.

I guess Larissa was right! We will be going places no regular tourists have ever gone before. (our last visit we got to see a secret broom closet that was tiled with the best stone pattern! It's now part of our tile collection.)

So for this month's FUN feature - I thought it would be great to provide a grand Tile Envy tour as well. It's a bit of a continuation of this history jag I've been on. I apologize to those of you for which history is a yawn. But a while ago I found this great post from our friends at designboom.com. Time Magazine named them one of the top 100 design influencers. If you aren't already a fan, I highly recommend this amazing blog about all things in the realm of super-cool design.

This particular post is a mini-primer on the history of tiles. I know my FUN posts are supposed to be sans-learning, but if you love tiles- this is very fun. And it reminded me of our upcoming tour because Mr. Hearst was a major collector of arts and antiquities and the castle has artifacts that range all the way back to 4th century BC Egypt-

Hope you have fun. You get an "A" just for reading!
