Imagine arriving in Manhattan during a newly emerging art movement in 1950's America, hanging out with your new pal, Robert Rauschenberg, and being mentored by the likes of Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and John Cage? I think that qualifies as a fairy-tale beginning. Twombly would go on to become one of the foremost American artists from that unique period between the abstract expressionists and the pop artists. I am an unwavering admirer of Twombly and what some have dubbed his "enigmatic graffiti". But it is, alas, his home-in-Rome (not America) that hath garnered my most covetous moments. Could it even be possible that Twombly then has the good fortune to travel to Rome, marry a baroness and live happily ever after in a fetching palazzo? Now that is just beyond unfair! Where's the tragedy? Where's the pathos? Recently, I happened upon photos of Twombly's palazzo while researching fabulous stone floor patterns for a new series of Tilevera tiles. Uncovered by the best researcher in the design blogosphere- Heather Clawson of [Habitually Chic](http://habituallychic.blogspot.com/) - the photos were taken by Horst for Vogue in 1966. The pic's were a huge interiors photography score, for sure! And the artist, his works and his unforgettable stone floors- that's beyond Tile Envy- **[Cy Twombly](http://www.cytwombly.info)** **at home** ** **[![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665336-jpg/blog-files/2.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=496&height=522&name=2.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "2. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665336-jpg/blog-files/2.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665346-jpg/blog-files/3.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=361&height=400&name=3.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "3. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665346-jpg/blog-files/3.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665356-jpg/blog-files/5.-horst-cy-twombly-rome-1966.jpg?width=339&height=512&name=5.-horst-cy-twombly-rome-1966.jpg "5. horst cy twombly rome 1966")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665356-jpg/blog-files/5.-horst-cy-twombly-rome-1966.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665366-jpg/blog-files/8.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=8.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "8. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665366-jpg/blog-files/8.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665376-jpg/blog-files/9.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=9.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "9. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665376-jpg/blog-files/9.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665386-jpg/blog-files/13.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=13.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "13. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665386-jpg/blog-files/13.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665396-jpg/blog-files/14.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=14.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "14. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665396-jpg/blog-files/14.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665406-jpg/blog-files/16.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=16.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "16. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665406-jpg/blog-files/16.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665416-jpg/blog-files/17.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=17.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "17. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665416-jpg/blog-files/17.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665426-jpg/blog-files/18.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=18.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "18. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665426-jpg/blog-files/18.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) ++++++ [![](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665436-jpg/blog-files/22.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg?width=300&height=400&name=22.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg "22. cy twombly rome horst vogue")](https://info.cletile.com/hs-fs/file-4031665436-jpg/blog-files/22.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) Share [**](http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=https://info.cletile.com/blog-test/tile_envy/artists-at-home-cy-twombly/) [**](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?original_referer=https://info.cletile.com/blog-test/tile_envy/artists-at-home-cy-twombly/&url=https://info.cletile.com/blog-test/tile_envy/artists-at-home-cy-twombly//&source=tweetbutton) [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com) [**](http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.cletile.com%2Fblog-test&media=http://cdn2.hubspot.net/hub/169240/file-4031665336-jpg/blog-files/2.-cy-twombly-rome-horst-vogue.jpg) [**Previous Post](https://info.cletile.com/blog-test/tile_envy/house-of-the-month-february-2011/) [**Next Post](https://info.cletile.com/blog-test/tile_envy/athos-bulcao-tile-revolutionist/) ### Related Posts ### COMPANY ### BLOGS ### CONTACT phone 415-887-9011 office hours M-F 8:00 am - 5:00 pm pt [send us an email ](https://info.cletile.com/contact-us) ### the clé inside scoop
