a few months back i started finding photos on pinterest that left me... well, transfixed. i decided to create a board simply titled "beautiful things" and to qualify, the image must stop me in my tracks for at least a good, long, moment or three.
recently, during a fun collaboration with a beloved SF designer, we began to lament our days in art school when students seemed determined to create works that could only be described as an assault to one's being- young artists trying desperately to create remarkable images (i'm describing my own experiences!).
i suggested that art should always be an assault, but a beautiful one.
in august- tile envy celebrates my pinterest take on "beautiful things". to kick it off, i'm sharing a story by tile envy friend, joann locktov of bellafigura communications, a celebration of one of my favorite architects, designers and foremost creators of beautiful things...carlo scarpa.

as only an italian master could, scarpa's architectural works have managed to remain iconic, holding their own amongst the demanding landscapes of italy with details inexpressibly modern and classic. there isn't a structure or architectural detail of scarpa's that doesn't give me pause for a good moment or more. this week, it surprised me to learn that scarpa also had a collaboration with cleto munari- designing artful objects. thanks to joann, her tale of their collaboration and lifelong friendship was just published in the curated object.
