wow!! we got a record response from yesterday's tile envy subway homage. it still leaves me pondering- why all the fuss??
mind you, i know why i love any sized rectangle set with a "broken" joint. as a true aficianado of the modernist-rough-luxe style- i can't get enough of that clean and ever so slightly edgy appeal of a wall clad in a subway pattern.
but what of all of you? surely you've got your own reasons for your subway crush. however, since i've probably been pondering this topic longer than most, let me get the discussion started with my own current theory. it's called - BRICK.
i think we've gone mad for brick surfaces. and it's not a tad here or there- but that of the full-scaled walls appropriate to the archaic warehouse spaces that we've all come to love.
i'm not talking little pony walls or non-ambitious wainscoting. we want full-on WALLS. it's a love affair with texture right now. from gritty graphics to army boots and lace skirts we're flat out for contrasts. our favorite blogs are filled with interior photography back-dropped with painted brick walls. and from crate and barrel to design within reach every other page is staged with what may as well be the same brick wall. my current thought; the subway tile trend remaining strong has gotten a new shot in the arm with this love for painted brick walls. and with that- i'm predicting our next favorite subway tile will be glazed brick. it provides a modern, sleek yet utilitarian finish- that right now is simply irresistible.
