carrara's sexy sisters

29 May 2013

i'm often struck by just how current remodelista is with what's buzzing in the design kingdom. if something begins to trend, they are on it and doing so by reporting the most prized versions of the emergent theme!

yesterday's tile feature about patchwork tile is a perfect case in point; pattern play as best illustrated with tiles. sarah took us on a magical tour of this hot tile trend.

today, i'm sharing another recent post of theirs- exotic marble in modern spaces , a surprising tale of a marble manifestation that has only begun to spark interest:

for at least the past decade, no other series of marbles have dominated the design world quite like those royal stones- calacatta, statuary and carrara. hand selected from the italian region of carrara, these white marble blocks, slabs and tiles have been prized by artists, architects and designers for centuries. if you want to elevate a space- add any of these stones. they're a sure thing!

but for the past several years, i've been telling anyone who will listen- the lesser known stones from this same region (arabescato vagli, breccia vagli violetta etc), with their astounding pink, green and sometimes purple veining were the true cinderellas of this marble fairy tale. you could only find them in a few stone yards, at first. they were always being dismissed in favor of their more favored white and grey siblings.

but then i started to see some designers step out, using a bit here and there. tom ford's new showrooms used them artfully, and other designers were beginning to fall under their exotic - slightly more hypnotic, rock-n-roll appeal.

bravo, alexa, for spotting a hot new stone trend and revealing just how sexy these wild looking marbles can be!
