Dale Chihuly

09 September 2010

This month, I'm back rummaging through all my notes on the various art happenings around the globe and I began to notice a collective of glass related odds and ends- event announcements, photos, ideas, installation support - yada yada yada. Clearly it was time to shine some of these glassy observations your way.

I'm kicking it off today with a visit to St. Petersburg, FL, where a combination of western red cedar, venetian plaster and raw steel have been formed into an art center specifically designed to house glass installations by Dale Chihuly. I'm a big fan of Chihuly's big glass and liken his robust whimsy to another of my favorite sculptors- David Smith. Okay- there are many differences- but there is no denying that the sheer bigness of their works takes on a life of it's own. Lucky for us, there's now a place to view some of Chihuly's grandeur-
