delft, the new black?

07 March 2013

you would almost think so the way it's been popping up everywhere lately. for me, the love of delftware started a while back- when i first saw the real thing- luminous blue and white tiles from royal makkum about 25 years ago. it's what cinched it for me! but let's face it- can you claim to be a true tile fan and not love delft?

01131B5E_front_gi had even started a delft pinboard (here) a while back and was surprised how quickly it managed to fill up with some of the best nods to delftware that i'd ever seen.

that was until i tripped onto a blog post that had featured clé's delft blue tiles from ruan hoffmann's, much love me series. little did i suspect that when opening the post i would be striking the delft motherlode!

slimpaley.com is a must read blog for anyone- not just us folks, obsessed with design - but anyone interested in lots of visuals on a trending theme. i like to think tile envy is like that- but writer carolyn espley-miller has got me beat! slimpaley.com has been awarded many times over for carolyn's insights and good taste. i love her site for the never-ending blog-roll of photos.

here's just a smidge of slim's delft madness- but be sure to click on the montage below to read and see ALL. i'd be interested to know if you agree that there might be a delft-conspiracy mounting. that's all good, in my neighborhood!

as a style- i've always been a fan of that imperial mix of white and blue. the blue is rangy- flowing effortlessly from deep dark cobalt to shades of baby blue. and at it's very best and most collectible- it's those white tin-glazes that take on their own special magic when decorated with wispy line drawings filled with all that blue. you can see why it became all the rage in the 17th century.

thanks, carolyn!
