Dries, please.

17 May 2011

In my fantasy life, I'm always clad in Dries Van Noten.

I can't say that about any other designer. Sure I have a ton of fantasy favorites for specific items- Prada for sweaters, Marni for coats, Vera Wang for ensembles, Alberta Ferretti for dresses, Marc Jacobs for bags, Louboutin for shoes. I could go on and on.

But Dries would be my one stop- wouldn't need to go anywhere else - designer. And beyond his styling phenomena, I'm so inspired by his staunch resistance to the demands of the mass market or even to the corporate luxury houses. He just does his own thing and has since he began as one of the Antwerp 6.

I was recently reading insights from industrial designer Yves Behar who was saying something like- if you're good you don't need to advertise. That struck me as arrogant at first- but I couldn't stop thinking about that. Dries, however, has never advertised. And his accomplishments are still growing as he sticks to the heart of his aesthetic and does his own thing. Design houses have come and gone. Designers have, and especially recently, tanked in dramatic super-sonic waves of collision. I'm hoping Dries remains true to his design heart-

Here are a few of my favorite things (Dries that is)-
