Get this look...Italian Villa II

07 May 2010

Now that we've experienced one of the more traditional and opulent renditions of an Italian palazzo- I thought it would be fun to see some of my favorite versions of this lifestyle- the modernized villa or palazzo. This is Italian Villa for the 21st century.

I personally think of myself as a modernist. And mostly because these days it can take on so many connotations- so the sky's the limit as long as it's got a modern sentiment. My own personal propensities lean toward very modern spaces, i.e. expanses, that are sparsely decorated with traditional pieces and surfaces. Conversely, I also love traditional spaces that have had the decks cleared for nothing but modern.

I believe we all yearn for contrast; you know, opposites attract. But from fashion (tomboy with girlie, formal with informal, H&M with Hermes), to decor (rough with luxe, modern with traditional, stately with homey), I'm all about opposites.

Here are some Italian villa and palazzo spaces that show just what I'm talking about. It's the best of the old outfitted with the best from the new- what's not to love??

Now back to Venice again. Are all the best palazzi in Venice, or am I just hooked on that mysterious city of canals? I have always been very drawn to Venice. There's the glass from Murano, that iconic San Marco square, and black ink pasta. Add to that - palazzi that reside over the water, and it's all magic.

Italian video artist, Fabrizio Plessi, is known for his works that often include studies of water. The following photos of his Venetian palazzo were created for Interiors magazine. It's the perfect example of modern Italian Villa.
