Isabel Toledo

07 June 2011

This week, Erin and I are still obsessing over some favorite artists that march to their own tune. And this week- they happen to have a tile connection, as well!!

From Pattern Girl-

ISABEL TOLEDO

Last week, when I was thinking of what to write, for some strange reason, well aren't "out of the blue" messages always strange- Isabel Toledo came into my mind.

Why? I had not had her on my radar since the late 80's and 90's and then Michelle Obama wore one of her creations for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

To tell the truth, I was not crazy about that dress. However, I decided to check a book out about her and found some beautiful edgy pictures, reminiscent of the Dada and Surrealist movement.

I began to hold a high respect for her story, her verve, her courage and her desire to stay true to her passions and heart.

Navigating the fashion industry, one of the most brutal to the creative, innovative types, she and her husband Ruben hitting a few curves here and there, have stayed true to their entrepreneurial spirit. Bravo!!!

When I told Deborah I was featuring the Toledo's as my post this week, she mentioned they also designed a collection of tiles for Ceramica Bardelli. Deborah is a walking design encyclopedia. She knows everything that is going on. I bow down to her knowledge.

When looking at the tile designs, I love her bold blocky designs and the way she has married geometric patterns with the fluidity of fabric.
