Marfa, Texas

07 July 2011

Marfa, Texas. I just like saying that. I instantly affect a drawl and cast a faraway gaze across miles of flatlands full of tumbleweeds, jackalopes, dust devils, and broken dreams. Well, not sure about the dream part- but the notion of Smalltown, Texas feels inherently melancholy. A stones-throw town, Marfa is in the high desert of far west Texas. Hey, might not sound as exotic as Italy or Japan- but could be if you're FROM Italy or Japan. Just give it a second and one can almost feel the heat-

Some important Marfa facts-

- was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop.

- Giant, Let There Be Blood, and No Country for Old Men were filmed in and around.

- The heat comes from being located in the Chihuahuan desert.

- The Marfa Lights are a light phenomenon attributed to paranormal circumstances, better known as headlights.

- Currently, the Amtrak Sunset Limited passes through, but does not stop.

But for today's purposes Marfa, Texas is all about Donald Judd and his Chinati (not Chianti) foundation. Established in 1986 at 1 Calvary Road, it's the perfect summertime destination for those seeking art under the langourous sun of Texas.
