if you caught this week's monday mention, you know that clé's remarkable collection of tiles from south african artist, ruan hoffmann, received a BIG mention in this month's elle decor tool box feature. (thank you, elle decor!)
but the other reason i love elle decor is because month after month they remain a design force in a world preoccupied with fine interior spaces. for instance, if you've been wondering what kelly wearstler has been up to lately (besides fashion & retail), look no further than ED's recent feature on kelly's mercer island project.
i'm not one for phrases like "a symphony of color" and so on. but this project is truly a symphony of something. maybe not so much color, even though there's tons of muted, masculine colors with a british flair- think new bbc sherlock homes- if mycroft had paid for sherlock's new digs...
i'm more apt to describe it as a symphony of, say, texture, style, pattern, & materials. it's all there, tastefully grouped with the signature wearstler pop's of more somethings, such as hand painted patterns on walls,
and custom brass pieces (stairwells & even bigger brass surprise- kitchen cabinets).
but for me kelly's symphonic masterpiece is all about the stone, and literally tons of it! in the master bath- there's elegant ox-blood colored slabs that are cut along the veins (marble veins!) and then boldly cladding the walls, vertically.
the black marquino bath tub carved out of a single block and the unbelievable marble parquet floors- everywhere - finishes this decadent homage to both venetian & parisian architecture. kelly must travel with her own stone people because, judging from the photos, the parquetry looks complex and impeccably crafted.
then moving to the entry and office, even more ways to showcase pattern and play with stone. with an entry repeated in blacks, whites and greys and an office that's anchored by a diagonally faceted block of what appears to be absolute black granite:
the thing that always gets me about kelly's spaces are her remarkable stone choices. who else goes all out selecting stones that most of us admire but few of us would use?? just like her fashion sense- it all takes a great eye and lots of confidence! it's good to see she's still raising the bar!
