Staying warm and snugly one sweater at a time...

24 November 2011

Today, Tile Envy wishes all of you a warm and snugly Thanksgiving filled with gratitude. This Thanksgiving we wanted to share the following commemoration from our friends at Studio H-

Hi friends,

One of my sisters recently took these pictures of my mom. The reason for the pictures was to add a copy with all the outfits she knits, and has done so continuously (and somewhat obsessively :)) for the last decade, for the children in Chernobyl. She has literally created hundreds ( no exaggeration!!) of little sweaters, scarves, socks, booties and even pants for the families still stuck in the Chernobyl area, unable to relocate due to poverty. My sisters and I joke about how my mom single handedly established a new local costume since half the children in the area must be dressed in her clothes. I just thought she should get some recognition for her efforts and tenacity whilst most of us never gave the disaster a second thought since it happened in 1986. I am proud of her!
Tile Envy would also like to thank this wonderful "grandmother" who hasn't forgotten all the forgotten children in Chernobyl. Before I read her story- I didn't know anything about these children. Our valiant knitter lives in Holland where she knits for her entire family and many, many families she will never know. Thanks to all people who labor tirelessly and invisibly to care for others. This year, let's not forget how one person is capable of making a difference in the lives of so many.
