subway for the runway

31 May 2012

we haven't completely tired of the standard, everyday subway tile- usually a 3x6 modest ceramic in white. but what we're really after these days is a subway on the verge of something extraordinary. it could still be a crisp gleaming white ceramic such as this lovely rendition on view at my new favorite kitchen store in san francisco-

march

march san francisco

march is a strikingly elegant space filled with all the kitchen details that befit the finer side of life. never mind that i'm coveting that aga cooker! the use of this larger module subway is handsome and commands attention from floor to ceiling.

yes, we're still very much taken with subway tiles and especially, if they are out-of-the-ordinary. below, a look at a few versions that can boast both function and fashion:

art of board: an emerging tile company with a magical product- art of board is on a mission. their ingenious tile, sk8, has got to be the most eco-friendly tile around. handmade from "rescued" skate decks, sk8 is perhaps the most fun and funky of all subway tiles.

modern patina: tilevera's newest tile takes a favorite material- mercury glass- and creates tiles in a patterned subway, taking 3 looks we love (subway, mercury glass and mondrian). very mod-rian :)

tempest tileworks: tempest ceramics are produced using delicately distressing techniques, i love tempest for it's muted (i.e. smudged) color palette. this subway from tempest is offered by filmore clark:

heath ceramics: with a new tile factory emerging in san francisco as we speak, heath is gearing up for some major tile production. here, a real spin on the idea of subway tiles with this chartreuse-colored hexagonal version.

il monile: i'd argue that italy is unparalleled in two categories- tile and design. so naturally, the most high quality and design forward subway this year comes to us from the faience region of italy. if you could just see their luscious glazes and mosaics up close...

metalicized limestone: tilevera's other favorite material is their canvas limestone. by taking the newest size; 4x12, and "metalicizing" them in a hand-painted platinum finish- an all new subway emerges. elegant, luminous and hand crafted stone is a perfect subway to pair with calacutta.

john whitmarsh: tiles made from shipping containers? from john whitmarsh's art collection, tiles are crafted from actual shipping containers. for the purposes of a functional tile installation, the artist has created a version of his container tiles in glazed and printed porcelain tiles.
