the tiles & tales of john whitmarsh, part I

14 March 2013

the first thing i read when cracking the spine of the latest vanity fair- is the proust questionnaire in the back.

quick, delish and revealing- vanity fair's clever celebrity query offers a long enough tight rope to allow a notable to either trip or take flight. i like how i've surprised myself when reading the tell-tale column. not as short or pandering as the actor's studio questionnaire, i've often discovered that some celebrities i had previously discounted were, indeed, eloquent and absorbing, while those that i had been certain would break my heart with whip-smart prods of humor and pathos were merely big duds.

this week tile envy offers a two-part introduction to the works of artist, john whitmarsh, as well as john's processes and inspirations. today's part I, is a fun nod to the proust questionnaire from this month's interiors and sources. it shares an alternate vantage point of john's tile collections for clé- from the tile's perspective!

personally, i love john's tiles for how they look (i'm shallow like that) but it was great to gather some new insights on a series of remarkable surfaces that continue to captivate the design community...

cle-JWbe sure to return tomorrow for part II, with more in-depth details about john whitmarsh, the artist.
