Watts not to love??

02 June 2010

Hey, more big news! Tile Envy is going - daily. Well, to be more exact- I should probably say Tile Envy is posting more often than weekly.

It dawned on me over the long weekend that I've got tons of material that keeps coming in from all of you as well as my own various interests. I started stacking them in my blog file and then last weekend I realized that I should just start posting them as I get them- kinda like a blog!??

When I started Tile Envy I knew I wanted to support the tile world from an arts and fashion perspective but didn't realize just how broad all of you would make that perspective with all your wonderful feedback and participation. So thanks to all of you- Tile Envy officially goes sort-of-daily, today!! And how fitting that it's on Martins b'day- Happy Birthday Martin!!

WATT'S TOWERS

I'm a huge fan of naive art from every single piece of art my kids have created- to artists as famous as Reverend Finster and the troubled Adolf Woolfli.

As you can see- the range of emotions in naive art can go from exuberant to haunting. I'm a fan of all of it. Recently, I read an article in the LA Times about how the state of finances in California is causing maintenance of and access to Watt's Towers to be reduced, possibly compromising their upkeep. NOT GOOD!!

Italian immigrant, Simon Rodia's wondrous towers in Los Angeles are some of my favorite 3-D mosaics. Using tiles, shards of china, marbles - whatever he could find - Simon constructed his wondrous towers of steel then carefully applied these found objects to the surface of his towers over the course of more than 30 years.

A few organizations are gathering their might to try to add support to the funds that care for this national treasure. For more on their efforts click here.

Isn't it amazing what one can accomplish in a lifetime? Let's hope future generations can take in the wonders of these looming towers.
